Spectacular Weather over Perth

Thursday 29th of January 2015 and Perth experienced a spectacular sky-show that put our Australia Day fireworks 3 days earlier in the shade! We also received a good soaking – 15.5mm in our rain gauge.

We were up at around 3am and Ian saw some intense activity on the online rain radar which he knew indicated thunderstorms. So he packed up his camera gear and took off to ‘the Zigzag‘ – a former railway alignment used to climb the Darling Range escarpment back in the days of steam. It has great views across Perth and is one of his favourite spots for a photo.

Here are some of the shots he managed to secure that morning.

One  strike produced a fireball on the ground where it impacted and we suspect it was a pole power transformer written off…

The storm caused power outages for 25000 homes for some time… Beautiful, but destructive nature at work.

Hope you enjoy these photographs and for our Perth readers, we hope you weren’t too inconvenienced by the power outages… our modem and WIFI transmitter certainly died tragically!

Fantastic pictures. I have seen some great storms in the Wheatbelt but these pictures are quite spectacular. Well done and welcome home.
